Pilot Plant Operator

Location: Advanced Biofuels Center, Calgary, Alberta  

Overview 

Are you passionate about renewable energy and cutting-edge technology? Steeper Energy is seeking a highly motivated and results-oriented Pilot Plant Operator to join our team at the Advanced Biofuels Center. As a member of our culturally diverse group, you’ll play a crucial role in commercializing our core technology, Hydrofaction®, and advancing upgrading pathways to produce 100% renewable fuels and chemicals.

Responsibilities: 

  • R&D Activities: You’ll be involved in research and development (R&D) activities related to Steeper Energy’s commercial engineering design. Specifically, you’ll focus on upgrading Hydrofaction® oil produced from various input materials to finished fuels or chemicals both for stand‐alone operation and as co‐processing at refineries. This includes executing experiments, troubleshooting, analyzing data, documenting findings, and preparing technical reports. 
  • Equipment Maintenance: You’ll operate, maintain, and repair laboratory equipment. Following equipment requirements and calibration checks is crucial to ensure accurate results. 
  • Laboratory Testing: You’ll perform laboratory testing based on established procedures. As you gain experience, you’ll learn new test procedures and improve your data interpretation skills. 
  • Sampling and Analysis: You’ll assist in developing and conducting sampling and analysis. This step is essential for understanding the properties of the materials being processed. 
  • General Lab Support: You’ll contribute to overall lab operations by providing support and performing other assigned duties. 

Qualifications: 

  • Technical Diploma: A diploma in Chemical, Petroleum, Process, Mechanical, or Electrical  
  • Refinery Experience: Knowledge or experience in refinery operations is advantageous. 
  • Personal Attributes: You should be highly motivated, enthusiastic, results-oriented, and flexible. Creativity in problem-solving is valued. 
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are necessary. 
  • Team Player: Collaboration and teamwork are essential in this role. 
  • Open to Students: If you’re a student looking to complete a practicum, this position offers an opportunity to gain valuable experience and has potential to extend into full-time employment afterward. 
  • Occasional weekend/shift work: The position involves shift work while campaigns are running with the occasional requirement for weekend work.
