Executive Summary
Breakthrough technology implementations are required to address climate change and human-driven environmental impacts. The two-pronged challenge of managing human-driven waste and reducing mankind’s carbon footprint can be directly addressed with Steeper’s technology portfolio.
Steeper Energy has developed a proprietary version of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) called Hydrofaction®. It converts biomass waste streams into renewable and sustainable biocrude oil. This in turn can be further refined into renewable fuels compatible with all types of reciprocating and turbine engines, and energy infrastructure currently in use today. This technology supports decarbonization by dramatically reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Waste streams from forestry, agriculture, animal, the biogenic portion of municipal solid waste (MSW), and much more, can all be processed using Hydrofaction®.

The relative cost to achieve the conversion of a barrel of Hydrofaction® Oil is clearly dependent on many factors including site factors, cost of feedstock, and transportation, to list a few. The range of costs is similar to the cost required to develop and produce a barrel of conventional oil in a new field in today’s fossil oil and gas industry. Steeper’s Hydrofaction® Oil value also benefits from higher prices due to carbon-reduction incentives which also vary considerably by jurisdiction. Nevertheless, the underlying economics associated with Steeper’s Hydrofaction® technology supports the proliferation of Steeper processing plants in thousands of locations globally.
The conversion of biomass wastes into finished fuels creates the opportunity to dramatically reduce fossil fuel consumption, helping achieve both decarbonization and waste management goals.
Converting biowaste using Hydrofaction® also produces pure liquid CO2 as a by-product of the process. This can be directly sequestered, or used for creating additional streams of renewable fuels.
Over $100 million Canadian has been invested in the development of Steeper’s technology portfolio and projects that bring the technology to life. Investment-grade decisions are now supportable based on economics unlocked by Hydrofaction® technology. The technology has been de-risked sufficiently to advance the proliferation of a wide range of commercial projects.
