Laboratory Technician

Location: Advanced Biofuels Center, Calgary, Alberta 

Overview

Steeper Energy is looking for a highly motivated, results-oriented Laboratory Technician to join our team at our Advanced Biofuels Center. You will be a member of a culturally diverse and passionate group of people enthusiastic about commercializing our core technology, Hydrofaction®, as well as providing upgrading pathways to produce 100% renewable fuels and chemicals. The Advanced Biofuels Center operates at a high scientific level of research and development and works with groundbreaking processes.

You will be specifically tasked with developing and implementing biocrude upgrading and co-processing strategies at our pilot-scale plant. Our ideal candidate will be trusted to dive right in, take the lead to improve and optimize our upgrading and characterization technologies and look for opportunities to contribute to value creation. You will have learning opportunities and will be encouraged to contribute and show creativity in your position.

Responsibilities Include

  • R&D activities in relation to development and optimization of Steeper Energy’s commercial engineering design for upgrading Hydrofaction® oil produced from various input materials to finished fuels or chemicals both for stand-alone operation and as co-processing at refineries, including execution, troubleshooting, data analysis, documentation and reporting of agreed experimental studies in the form of technical reports;
  • Operate, maintain and repair laboratory equipment following equipment requirements and calibration checks;
  • Perform laboratory testing following training in test procedures;
  • Performs basic analytical testing with progressive learning of new test procedures and data interpretation;
  • Assist in developing and conducting sampling and analysis;
  • Provide general lab support and other duties as assigned by Management.

Qualifications

  • Technical diploma as a laboratory technician, chemical Technician, Petroleum Technician or mechanical technician;
  • Working experience in analytical laboratory >1 years
  • Knowledge and/or experience in refinery operation
  • Strong analytical and characterization skills
  • Highly motivated, enthusiastic, results-oriented and flexible individual
  • Ability to develop creative solutions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required
  • Be a strong team player
